In a future where the Earth is uninhabitable, humanity's only option is to turn to the stars...
Of course, where there is colonization, there are always, well... Growing pains.
These growing pains, unfortunately, only worsened with time; as contempt deepened, tensions grew. Two intergalactic colonies β known as the Union and the Commonwealth respectively β eventually launched into a bitter intergalactic war which gradually escalated in firepower and brutality. It reached its cataclysmic peak with the Tragedy of Pegassi: the inadvertent detonation of the Warp Bomb in the Pegasus System.
The horrific explosion took out the entire System: planet, star and inhabitants alike. Gravitational storms became common occurrences, and space travel in this sector of space became near impossible β even for the most experienced Pilots. This zone is now called the Non-Colonization Area, or NCA.
In the aftermath of this devastation, peace was brokered. The Commonwealth and Union factions banded together and formed the Ranger Corps to keep βpeaceβ in the NCA - a highly regarded unit of elite pilots known for their fearlessness and effectiveness in battle.
When both warring sides retreated from the NCA, criminals entered the power vacuum created by their departure. Out of the rabble, three pirate guilds formed: the Xanorra Collective, the Brooksea Company, and the Chareux Junkers. The Xanorra Collective is composed of sadistic slavers, the galaxyβs worst and most despised pirates, with even more deranged subfactions like the pyromaniacal Fire Dancers. The Brooksea Company is a group of mercenaries willing to work for whoever pays the most; their ranks include former Union and Commonwealth soldiers, individuals disgusted with the calls for peace from their former benefactors. The Chareux Junkers focus mainly on salvaging and trading mechanical parts, and theyβre not above stealing those mechanical parts from the Union, Commonwealth, or enemy pirate guilds.
The Rangers have battled against these pirate factions since their inception.
