XANORRA COLLECTIVE
When the Great War of Arat ended, there resulted a refugee crisis never before seen in human-occupied space. Many people were displaced because of the constant and unyielding battles. Families were torn apart as fathers and mothers were sent to the frontlines on either side. For many people living in the now deserted Frontier Space, fleeing these war-torn areas required money, which many of them didn’t have. Into this brew of disfunction, the Xanorra Collective arose like a festering boil.
Slavers by trade, they are seen as the bottom feeders of the various pirate factions which soon infested the Trench Systems. Following an ideology of making a profit off the backs of human beings, the Collective operates with impunity, destroying countless lives, Union, and Commonwealth alike. Many of the kidnapped souls are placed on far-flung mining operations, some of which suffer from the harshest weather conditions. Fifteen-hour days and seven-day weeks are the schedules that many of these slaves endure. A back-breaking, heart rending, and mind numbing work regimen was instilled by the Collective in the hopes of destroying the will of their victims. Beatings and countless forms of torture have been instituted in many mining camps as a deterrent for those slaves who “step out of line.”
These practitioners of the human bondage trade sail the stars on a voyage of the damned, destroying the soul and the wills of the many unfortunates which they come across. For the few slaves that decide to fight back, just look out your port window. You’ll see the frozen husks of your spaced brethren floating in a macabre human chain for miles to come.
The scale of the Great War of Arat separated it from past conflicts in its scope. The Union and the Commonwealth had gone bigger, and bigger, and bigger when it came to the tools of destruction which they created for the war effort. Complete annihilation was the name of the game, no matter the cost. This created a graveyard of not just broken bodies on each side, but a voiceless tomb of hardware ripe for the pickings. Husks of ships stood as dilapidated testaments to the conflict. Abandoned space stations twirled in deep space, with countless technological treasure troves. They just needed someone to “liberate” them from the cold confines of space.
Their redeemers came in the form of the Chareux Junkers. This group of space pirates had been on the rise even before the Great War of Arat. Seen as a “necessary nuisance,” these interstellar brigands made a career out of subsisting on the scraps that the universe saw fit to give them. After the Tragedy of Pegassi, business boomed for the Chareux Junkers. The Warp Bomb had created an area of space trash that was ripe for the picking - a cornucopia of black-market parts for the group.
Most people saw the destruction of planets in the wake of the Tragedy of Pegassi as horrendous. The Junkers used it as an opportunity to attack an area of space that many people avoided like a plague. After hiring the protective services of a new upstart mercenary outfit known as the Brooksea Company, the Junkers risked life and limb in exploded planetoids, and warp-affected areas of space to do their work. Their opportunistic industry has led to them being considered as one of the three top pirate factions in Frontier Space.
With the cessation of hostilities between the Union and the Commonwealth, there came an uneasy peace. Many felt that each side had given up too much considering the endless blood which had been shed. Such was the mindset of Hades Chosen. A group of elite and formidable Union shock troopers, this group had experienced some of the most hellish combat of the worlds-spanning conflict. They’d bled and killed all in the name of their “beloved” Union.
Coalescing these feelings of frustration, anger, and discontent, Hades Chosen created the Brooksea Company. While the No Colonization Zone grew, and news spread of the illicit riches that were to be gained in this area of space, the leaders of Brooksea struck while the iron was hot. Utilizing years of military training and stratagem, they started a campaign to completely erase already established pirate guilds, taking a “salting the earth” method. As the years progressed, more and more disaffected Union (and in some cases Commonwealth) soldiers joined the ranks of Brooksea. The company began leasing out its services to the highest bidder, raking in profit from mercenary work and illegal mining endeavours.
Realizing that the retired soldiers were not a finite resource, the founding members of the Brooksea Company brought on the services of former Union geneticists. Unbeknownst to anyone except those at the highest rungs of Brooksea, much of Brooksea’s manpower started to come from cloning. These genetically engineered men and women were hired out as trained killers, miners, and guards for some of the most disreputable pirate factions in the universe. Rising in stature with every year Brooksea has made good on the goals of its founders: never again be anyone’s pawn to be tossed to the wayside. Get yours while the getting’s good.
