In the Shining Star Bar, an envious and embittered Ranger strikes a deal with a Junker named Herma. In return for an Ace Figurine (which they believe will win them glory and appreciation among the Ranger ranks) the Ranger smuggles the Junker onto Halberd-001 to steal a piece of tech. The Junker is disguised, and the Ranger distracts Goda and Pennaway to clear his way. The theft is a success, but when the pair meet to swap the Ace Figurine, a trap is sprung. Junkers surround the Ranger - and are ambushed in turn by Xanorra. In the ensuing firefight, the Ranger shoots down several Xanorra, wings Herma’s ship and pursues him. Finally wresting the Ace Figurine from the Junker, the Ranger resolves to leave the Rangers behind, selling the figurine to Merchant Zorran and setting out with a fortune. When they learn from Zorran that the figurine is a fake, they are plunged into despair. However, thankful for the Xanorra the Ranger shot down, Zorran offers a few hundred credits for the fake - seeing the chance to make some kind of new start, however humble, the ex-Ranger takes the deal.

On planet Typhon (located in the Ionia system), Ayanna runs a thriving strawberry farm. Ayanna is a widower with two children: Bolin and Sahra. Her deceased husband, Simu, was once a Ranger engineer. One night she meets up with a friend named Francisca, a Ranger. Francisca warns her that the violence of the NCA is slowly leaching through to the Ionia system and that she won’t be around as much to keep the family safe. The Ranger explains that it would be best if Ayanna and the children left the farm, as pirate factions could see the strawberry crop/ farm as a cash cow. Ayanna states that she’s not leaving everything she and Simu built behind and that she and the kids will be okay. She also confirms that another former Ranger friend of Simu, Molly, is staying with them and will help keep them protected.
Meanwhile, Xanorra slavers have learned about the strawberry farm and made plans for the farm. The Xanorra crew of Hell’s Damned (a four-person team including Selv and Rosci) is led by Xanorra captain Selv, who lays out her plan to her second-in-command Rosci. She explains that she wants to rise higher in the ranks of the Xanorra, and it won’t be done only through human trafficking. She also feels that this will help expand the financial reach of the Xanorra Collective. She confirms she will kill or enslave the family depending on how they react to the attack.
Over the next few weeks, Ayanna and Molly have been prepping the defenses of the farm for any attack. Molly explains that they need more weapons/ artillery to defend the farm more effectively. She also states that the other option is to leave. Ayanna says they aren’t going and are preparing with what they have.
The crew of Hell’s Damned attack the farm. Selv and Rosci land on the planet to lead their portion of the attack. The two other members of the crew, Waze, and Gladys, are already on the planet, preparing to attack. The ship is attacked/ destroyed by the hidden defenses of the farm, and both Selv and Rosci are injured. Molly encounters Gladys and kills her.
Gladys infiltrates the farmhouse and shoots Ayanna, where she and the kids are hiding. Before he fires a killing shot, Zahra hits and kills him. Francisca arrives days later and explains that Selv got away, and they were able to take Rosci into custody. Molly then explains she will catch Selv, which Franscisca disapproves of. As Fransisca argues with Ayanna about why Molly’s mission is a bad idea, Molly lifts off in a shuttle on her search.
